Homeschooling on the Road: A Vanlife Journey

We plummeted 90ft into a mine shaft and still lived to tell the tale 👀

On our journey around 2 years back, we visited and museum called big pit. Theo was only 5, so I wasn't sure he would remember it...

He begged me to come back, so we did. BigPit tells the story of a coal mine and it's workers from when it opened, to when it closed.

The stories are both heart warming and sad, from the comradery to the deaths of some individuals really pulled on our heart strings.

It used to be free to enter the mines, but now they only charge a modest £5 per person to enter the mine and it's totally worth the visit if your in the area!

As Theo is home schooled, £5 for a days worth of learning is completely fine with us! And you'll be helping the museum to stay open to future generations.

I tried to capture the perfect sunset over the mountains…
But Nathan? He had other plans.
Every. single. shot.
Either his hand, his head—or him doing something ridiculous right in the middle of my view. 🙄

At first, I was a little annoyed…
But then I looked over and saw him laughing, just being goofy, and I realized:
This moment? This memory? It's way better than any photo.🥰

After a tough weekend, this was exactly what we needed.
To let go.
To laugh with eachother
To live in the now.

Finding friendship in the most unexpected places 👇🏼🌟

A couple of nights ago, we decided to pull up into a layby to sleep, not knowing it would lead to such a beautiful connection. After a walk we came back to find a woman with a young child. Nathan introduced himself, and we quickly realized we had so much in common!

Her little boy instantly clicked with Theo, and they spent hours playing in the van, followed by adventures in nature! 🌿💧

Shell’s experiences and beliefs really resonated with us, and we’re so grateful to have met someone who shares similar values. Making friends on the road can be challenging, but this is a friendship I’ll truly treasure. 🫶

She’s an amazing person, and her little one is strong-willed and full of spirit. Plus, she’s homeschooling him, which is so inspiring! 🌈 I’m so thankful to have found her!

As parents, we all know how hard it can be to get that perfect shot of our kids. You ask them to smile, and you end up with a face like this every time! No matter how much you ask, the result is always the same. 👀

When we take him on walks or a day out to enjoy the beautiful views or learn something new for example, here we were watching planes take off at a local airport, and giving him all the space he needs to run wild, we capture moments like this! 🥹

In this picture, he's having the time of his life, burning off energy, and just being his goofy, wonderful self. We embrace all the weird and wonderful sides of him, and social expectations simply aren’t a part of his world. 🌎 We let him be him. We teach him kindness, love, and to appreciate everything around him. Why force him to smile when this is clearly what makes him happiest? ❤️

2025 started with a plan.... To finish the van build! Get a wall up, another window in and box in the fridge to make another seat...oh and a proper floor rather than carpet we picked up cheap from Aldi ( just being real!)

We haven't shown the van on this channel yet, part of that is not feeling comfortable posting our half finished van on the internet, even if it is livable! But when this is done, you'll be be seeing a whole lot more of our tiny home on wheels!

At this moment in time though, it's been halted. We have a faulty clutch! It started slipping about a month ago, we thought it was down to a leak, but as it turns out, it needs replacing!

Come summer time, there will be a whole new load of travel content to come! We hope to travel around Europe some more, maybe spend a few weeks out there doing what we do best! Living our best life! ❤️

The past is full of adventure too! ⚓

We toured the @phdockyard (Portsmouth Historic Dockyard) , where we explored several iconic ships, including Henry VIII's Mary Rose.

The ship in the photo is the HMS Warrior, a naval vessel from the reign of Queen Victoria. As the first iron-hulled warship, she was a symbol of pride for Queen Victoria. Built between 1859 and 1861, she sailed until her decommissioning in 1883. In 1979, she was preserved and now serves as a museum ship in Portsmouth Harbour.

The past is full of adventure too! ⚓

We toured the @phdockyard (Portsmouth Historic Dockyard) , where we explored several iconic ships, including Henry VIII's Mary Rose.

The ship in the photo is the HMS Warrior, a naval vessel from the reign of Queen Victoria. As the first iron-hulled warship, she was a symbol of pride for Queen Victoria. Built between 1859 and 1861, she sailed until her decommissioning in 1883. In 1979, she was preserved and now serves as a museum ship in Portsmouth Harbour.

In an earlier post I described our year in 2024 and how we were not really doing what we would describe as vanlife. We were pretty much stationary or travelling to support family.

We are finally back on the road!! Making new memories and posting hopefully more frequently!

We were at a national trust today, something to ease us back into the swing of things, we support national trust through a monthly membership and absolutely love visiting there houses! This was a beautiful tudor manor, the grounds itself dates back 1000 years and has seen the likes of saxons, normans, tudor, victorian ect ect. This place was packed with history! We are not at all religious, but felt fitting to get a picture of the virgin Mary with the sun behind her! ❤️😍

We would usually be posting about how amazing our year was 2024, how we travelled to amazing places and saw it all.. We had big plans for 2024 at the beginning of the year, but things happened, family needed us and we spent most of this year travelling between Birmingham, Worcestershire and Alton.

We had a 2 week family travelling holiday in France to get away and get that travel feeling back. But only knowing we had to go back was tainting the trip a little.

We love supporting family and friends and would always put that first, this year has been so full on, so the travel content hasn't come through on Instagram and I feel I've neglected this page. I've lost followers and everytime I looked at the page I just felt overwhelm.

So without further ado.....

🇫🇷Walking on a dream, how can I explain🇫🇷

We're in the South of France! 2 days of driving, some of the longest drives and worse accidents we have experienced thus far on our journey.

The French are some of the nicest people we have met! What a dream they are to be around ❤️ their driving is insane though, but we love it!

The first day was spent at the beach near Monpellier, unfortunately due to low emissions and out lack of a badge, we were not able to visit the inner city. We got severely burnt, but had a wonderful time dipping our toes into the Mediterranean Sea for the first time! 🌊

We visited Arles, the beautiful roman city steeped in history, we spent our birthdays here, and what a few days of exploring it was! If your ever in the south of France, do not overlook it!

Now we are in Marseille, we didn't go into the city, we were so scared to leave the van! We've heard so many horror stories of thefts and vans being broken into, we just didn't feel comfortable leaving our baby! So we admired the beauty of the Mediterranean from home sweet home!

Van break ins are all to common across big cities, it's best to invest in a good camera that can connect to the Internet and controlled by your phone! We used Imou! Cheap camera but has a built in alarm and notification system to keep you and your van safe on the road! *not sponsored*

A throne fit for a prince! 👑

Recently we've been by the coast in Portland, and we have loved the beautiful weather and the amazing views it has to offer.

We went exploring to find a stone circle, made up of portland stone, and a 1700s quarry which has now been transformed into a sculpture park.

There were some really interesting sculptures there, including this throne, the talent is incredible when you think about how someone has carved this by hand!

If it were not for vanlife, we wouldn't have even discovered this, we would have been sitting at home, watching TV. But instead we are out here seeing the world! Forever grateful that we can call this our life 🚐❤️

Just a girl and her little brother spending precious time together 💕

Theo absolutely adores his sister. We see her few and far between, she's also a fellow vanlifer and works on a farm. When she visits, it's always special as we don't see her often.

Erin is a force to be reckoned with, she seems shy around other people and doesn't appear to talk much. But she has such an outstanding personality and is really quite wonderful. I'm grateful to have her in my life!

Before she got her full time job, we used to see her all the time, we would spend a week away with her here and there, now ocassions like this are far more rare! We always miss her when she goes, and can't wait for the next time we get to see her.

Nathan... The highwayman... 👀

We visited Porchester castle, as you can probably tell, they had dress up there...

When we visited, we were told about a volunteer who knew lots of history surrounding the castle, and he did, what he knew was interesting, he had many stories and kept us for a good while.

We politely made our escape from him, thanked him for his knowledge and went on to see the rest of the castle.

Nathan found dress up in the basement, he was the first to try anything on, then forced me into a dress that was both smelly and to small... If you kmow me, I don't do dresses.... Ever! As he placed a hat on my head, a stranger and his children walked in... Safe to say he grimaced and shuffled his kids away as quickly as possible....

Another family and his children came in, Nathan his his head behind the cloak said 'intruders! Hide my identity' then pranced around like Captian Jack Sparrow.... I was deeply embarrassed, but also proud that he can be himself in front of total strangers.... they joined in with the weirdness, which was pretty cool.... And that's Porchester castle.... Worth a visit... 😂

As we travel all the time, I never get to spend time with the other people in my life, my mum always works long and very demanding hours, so getting out was an opportunity we could not miss!

We recently visited Tamworth Castle with family and it was a beautiful day out! As soon as we entered the castle, Nathan spotted the dress up.... Obviously we spent the most time in this room 😂

Fun fact
Nathan has a leather cowboy hat he regularly wears, this day he took it off to wear this helmet, a group of girls came in, thought it was apart of the dress up and took pictures in it😂

They later saw Nathan walking around in it and when the realisation hit, we couldn't stop laughing 😂

If you haven't visited Tamworth castle, give it a visit, they also have a huge park just outside for the kids too!

We recently visited the Tudor museum in Worcester, and for free! It was set in the home of a Tudor family, which later became a tavern with a dodgy reputation!

Theo loved the stocks the most, it was only £1 to get this picture and his smile was priceless!

There around 4-5 rooms to explore and alot of information for a free museum, we also visited the cathedral, and the St Andrews church ruin!

Nathan grew up in Worcester, his so lucky to have grown up in a beautiful city and seeing the places that have been the focus of his many stories were very surreal!

We went to Mars today... 👀

We spent all day in the Amlwch copper quarry, we had been told by locals that it looked like the surface of the moon, but personally due to how red it is, it's more like Mars!

We spent all day exploring the quarry and trying to get a peak of the mines, it was the most spectacular thing and it really felt like the surface of Mars!

Theo loved it and found some gem stones too. Which he was over the moon with!

If you ever get a chance to visit, do it, it's so worth it!

We almost drowned for this view! 👀

We spent last weekend visiting Cwmorthin slate quarry, we swam in the lake and agreed to go on a 'short walk'

When your partner says let's go on a short walk, don't beleive him! I was not dressed appropriately for a hike! 😂 We walked over a slate hill and down to a mine, and then just sort of carried on.....

Turns out that the land here is extremely boggy, to a point we were up to our knees in it at one point! Thinking back, this was so dangerous! We put Theo on our backs to avoid him from sinking down and tried to make it over the land as soon as possible! Nathan ended up falling into a river and couldn't touch the ground, lucky he got out because we had heard stories after the walk about people being sucked underneath the bog 😬

It was to dangerous to walk back so we had no choice but to carry on. So we ended up walking up a mountain to avoid the bog, and to keep away from danger, we followed a goat trail up the side of the mountain to stay fairly level, but this was a tough walk!

We must of been out all day long.... We tracked our route on Google maps....

3 MILES..... WE ONLY WALKED 3 MILES! 🤦🏻‍♀️

It felt like we had hiked like 7! How did it take all day 😂

I don't regret it though, no matter how hard it was 😁 and we are safe!

We come to a Roman settlement, and there are tonnes of daisy's! 🌼

Theo decided he was going to pick a daisy for me, he does this often and I think it's the sweetest thing! Although when I've given him one, he shouts 'no that's for girls'! 😂

We went to roman settlement in Caernarfon the other day, it had ties to a Roman emperor called Mascen Wledig, who married a British princess called Elen and ruled together in Wales.

This is the upside of incubating an egg in my bra.... I get to take it on adventures! Hopefully it will hatch, and s/he can come on real adventures! 😂

We are officially in Wales! We visited south Wales last year, and it was amazing! We thought we would do North Wales this time, and it has not disappointed!

A lesson learnt to NEVER make this again!

This was a recipe I'd seen all over tiktok and insta.... Honestly I did not know what I did wrong!

If you didn't know, it's wild garlic season, we found a woodland floor covered with them, so we picked a few and made some recipes with them!

Wild garlic pesto was definitely on my list! After seeing people absolutely rave ahout it, it was a must do!

When I tell you, it tasted good when we made the sauce, but as soon as it was added to the pasta and heated up.... What an earth happened!

It tasted RANK! We all had a bite, looked at the each and could just tell we all hated it! Safe to say, we had toast for dinner! 😂

We are near our home town for an upcoming appointment, and we are feeling pretty glum about being back. But walks where we find beautiful flowers make up for it!

This is near Leighton buzzard in Buckinghamshire, a place near Ashbridge Estate, we are really enjoying seeing spring take its effect.

Throwback Thursday!

Throwback to when the world decended into chaos! Our 2020 holiday to Scotland, we crossed the pentland firth mid covid, and unless you were wearing a face mask, it meant no entry!

The covid pandemic outbreak happened four years ago... How has time gone that fast? Theo beleived that wearing a face mask was normal, that made me so sad:(

I thought that this was it, this was how it was going to be for good, but fast foward four years and it seems like it was all weird dream!

We are so lucky that we get to live this life, we get to live our dream and travel, and while it's not all plain sailing, I wouldn't have it any other way!

We got up at 6am to witness this!

6am is not our usual wake up time, this was pretty early for us! But all worth it to get this shot of the sun rising over stongehenge!

We have been here since Saturday last week, we woke up early on Sunday morning to see the sunrise, only to be greeted with thick cloud!

Some might say it wasn't worth it, but we got so much done! Usually the weekend is a day for laying in, but we managed three @englishheritage sites, and a trip into Salisbury town, which is beautiful!

So if your not a morning person, take this picture as a reason to get up and out of bed earlier! It's definitely always worth it ❤️

We visited King Arthur's strong hold!

The climb up was slippery due to loose rocks, but it was about 10 minutes to get up there.

When we arrived, we never expected that the area of south Cadbury has ties to the legend himself, King Arthur of Camelot.

Reading up on the history of this place, we found that the ancient iron age hill fort was once a military strong hold for over 4000 years!

As Mentioned in the doomsday book, Turstin FitsRolf held Cadbury Castle in 1086 and was part of the the feudal barony of North Cadbury.

The renowned British author John Leyland wrote about King Arthur being associated with Cadbury Castle in his account of Ancient British History. He wrote: At the very south end of the church of South-Cadbyri standeth Camallate, sometime a famous town or castle… The people can tell nothing there but that they have heard say Arthur much resorted to Camalat…

Because of John Leylands account, this has been much debated for the last 500 years.

I wonder what secrets are held here, the site is protected so no digging or metal detectors are allowed, not that we would want to do that, but could you imagine the things you'd find buried in the soil!
